There are two side effects. One is where the needle enters, either the right hip area or left wrist. A little pain or bruising is normal. The second is inside the prostate. There is a lot of inflammation in the prostate, so some pain, discomfort, bladder spasms, risk of urinary infection. All these symptoms are managed with medications, and after about 5 days they go away.
In contrast to ALL the urologist-performed BPH procedures (prostatectomy, urolift, holep, TURP, etc), which ALL have some risk of nerve damage/urinary incontinence/erectile dysfunction. PAE has no risk for erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation, or incontinence.

Embolization, which involves inserting a long thin plastic tube into a blood vessel, directing it through the blood stream to a target organ, and injecting medication to stop blood flow, has been around for decades. This technique has been used to kill cancerous tumors, shrink uterine fibroids, and stop gastrointestinal or traumatic bleeding for instance. Embolizing the prostate to shrink it and improve BPH symptoms has been done for about 10 years.
I don't know, but it's certainly an excellent option for many BPH patients.
It's important to know that BPH is NOT prostate cancer. If you think you may have prostate cancer do not come to our office, go see a urologist. If you are suffering from BPH symptoms, then shrinking the prostate may help your symptoms. Our doctors will investigate your symptoms and that may include a test for prostate cancer, such as a blood test or an MRI, or a prostate biopsy may be recommended to exclude cancer. Your PAE doctor will discuss that with you in the office.
